STEAM in the Library: Willy Wonka Play Dough

It's Roald Dahl Day! Roald Dahl is an English author who is responsible for beloved children's stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda. As a child in boarding school, Roald and his classmates were invited to try out chocolate bars by an upcoming chocolate factory near his school, which led his imagination to create the magical world of Willy Wonka. To commemorate his birthday yearly, libraries nationwide often create colorful displays, host movie showings, and serve delicious treats to draw in youth visitors. Weekly, in our library, we host a children's STEAM program for youths ages 6-11, where we plan out and make our science, technology, or art creations. This week, I decided to guide the participants through creating their own Willy Wonka-esque play dough, which was chocolate-scented! This was a huge hit. You can find pictures of this successful event below! This idea was inspired by https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/no-cook-playdough/.

Summary: In "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," a young boy named Charlie enters a contest to find a golden ticket that will give him access to a tour of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Charlie's family is poor, but they are able to find enough money to buy just one chocolate bar, which, luckily for him, has a golden ticket inside! Charlie and his grandfather make the journey to Willy Wonka's factory, where they experience a trip of a lifetime, meeting interesting characters from all over the world. Throughout this story, children will learn all about humility, empathy, creativity, and, most importantly, having fun!
